Top 10 Sad Captive Prince –Moments

I haven't found something like that yet, so I just did it:

In the Captive Prince trilogy there can found many moments that make the readers just feel bad for some of the characters and arouse pure hatred for other characters. It wasn’t easy to rank the situations and maybe, reading this list in a time, I would change a few things myself. Or maybe I missed some moments. But I tried my best to consider everything. So that’s just my personal opinion and everyone can feel free to have another one. If you haven’t read all three books to the end, this is probably full of spoilers.

10. Who was stronger

I really couldn’t decide if No 10 goes to the girl in the attacked village who wished someone would have been stronger than Damen or to one moment Damen talked about about Auguste. But somehow, these scenes are related and so I put them both here.

The first moment I’m talking about:

After the attack of a village that should not just blame Damianos but also separate Makedon and his men from Damens troop, Damen went to see one girl of the village to tell her that he would get revenge for what happened to her people.

The girl didn’t like it though, she still blames Akielos and doesn’t want to hear anything Damen had to say.

“It wasn’t fair what happened to your village,” Damen said to her. “No fight is ever fair. Someone’s always stronger. But I’ll give you justice. That I swear.”

“I wish Akielos had never come to Delfeur,” said the girl. “I wish someone had been stronger that you” (KR 171)

Think about it. Who could that someone probably have been? Auguste. But what would that have meant?

Then, there is the other moment I was talking about. After Damen had beaten Laurent in a fight. At this particular moment, I really hate Damen. Actually I don’t, but hearing Damen talk like that was just unfair.

“I know,” said Laurent, “that I was never good enough.”

Damen said, “And neither was your brother” (KR 137)

Later Damen admitted that he really wasn’t fair to be like that and that Laurent didn’t deserve this. But what makes me really mad was that Damensaid that even if he wasn’t stronger than Auguste. Just in that particular moment. And for a good reason. We don’t know who’d have been stronger, if Auguste hadn’t been fighting for hours already.

And here we go again. Maybe Auguste would have been stronger. We can't say for sure. But that in return would have meant Damens death (we clearly don't want that, either). And all of that just because their kingdoms are at war.

Laurent once said, they’d liked each other.

9. Laurent’s realisation

Laurent is a very smart character. So, when he admitted when he finally realised that the Regent really wanted him death, it’s kinda sad. I’m sure one part of Laurent already knew, but it also shows that Laurent still had a blind spot for the Regent until he poisoned Laurent’s horse and sent killers for him.

Of cause Laurent actually must have known that his uncle would go that far. Otherwise he wouldn’t have ditched his dutys at the border or suspected his uncle in the first place. But part of him just didn’t want to believe it until this moment... Pretty late, especially for Laurent, who doesn’t trust anyone in the first place.

“I didn’t think he’s really try to kill me,” Laurent said. “After everything... Even after everything.”

And the end of that quote even gives something else away. And that blind spot for the Regent is also seen in the other of the Regents boys. Even stronger.

8. Aimeric’s Betrayal

Aimeric, soldier in Laurents army and son of one of the most loyal of the Regent’s councillors, was thought of someone loyal to Laurent. He took more than one beating protecting the prince’s name from the Regent’s men. Even bigger hit the shock when Aimeric finally revealed why he actually joined the Princes guard. To cause trouble, maybe get some information and betray Laurent in the best possible moment.

“I can deny anything I like,” said Laurent, “in the absence of proof.”

“He has proof. He has my testimony. I saw everything.” (PG 257)

This isn’t quiet it, because this puts Jords (probably most trusted member of the princes guard) loyalty and feelings to the test. He was the one who fell for Aimeric and even covered his absence right before the boys betrayal.

Another effect of Aimeric’s betrayal is that Orlant (killed by Aimeric for being a traitor) really was the one who tried to protect the prince and his guard. Oh, he was a good friend of Jord, by the way.

“Orlant,” said Laurent, “didn’t deserve to die alone on the sword of a self-serving aristocrat he thought was a friend.”

“I know that,” said Jord. (PG 311)

7. Nicaise’s Farewell

Nicaise already knew he wouldn’t see Laurent again and and that this goodbye was for good. He knew the Regent wanted to kill Laurent, he just made the mistake to believe the Regent wouldn’t kill Nicaise himself.

“I remember the offer you made me. Everything you said then was a lie. I knew it was,” said Nicaise. “You’re leaving.”

“I’m coming back,” said Laurent.

“Is that what you think?” (CP 242)

6. Laurent’s internal struggle

Of cause we know that Laurent hated Damen for killing his brother, and probably blaming Damianos of Akielos for anything elsoe that he’d been trough. Who could blame him for that? But the more time Laurent spends with Damen, the more he noticed that Damianos isn’t the man Laurent thought he was.

And that made everything worse. But let Laurent explain it himself:

“I hated you. I hated you so badly I thought I’d choke on it. If my uncle hadn’t stopped me, I would have killed you. And then, you saved my life, and every time I needed you, you were there, and I hated you for that, too.” (KR)

This probably happens when you want to give in and trust a person, but on the other hand you hate the person for a very good reason.

5. Aimerics Death

Here we finally learn why Aimeric did what he did in the first place. What makes his whole betrayal even worse. It’s not, how Jord thought, that Aimeric was loyal to his family. Laurent confronted Aimeric with the fact that Aimeric was one of the Regent’s lovers, too, and manipulated by him.

“Why do you think my uncle asked you to whore yourself out to a common armsman before he’d deign to touch you? That’s what he thought you were good for. Screwing my soldiers. And you couldn’t even do that right.” (PG 318)

That’s why he finally killed himself. Of cause, Aimeric made a big mistake, but he clearly didn’t deserve death. And he clearly didn’t deserve to kill himself just because he could neither make it up to the Regent nor to Jord.

“I’m sorry, Jord”

They were the last words anyone would have from him. He had killed himself. (PG 361)

We’d like to have seen how Aimeric could have made amends, helped Laurent fight the Regent and Jord forgiving him. But he didn’t get the chance.

4. Marlas at night

When they were at Marlas, of cause Laurent had to visit the place where Auguste dies. Augustes death is the reason everything happened to Laurent the way it did and for Laurent, everything had been about Auguste. As a child he was his hero and growing up the one thing he wanted most was taking revenge for his brother’s death. And being where Auguste took his last breath must wake every bad memory in Laurent.

Auguste’s death itself just doesn’t belong to this list because it happened six years earlier and wasn’t in the book (only in Damens memories). “Here was the place where he had killed the last of the Prince’s guard, and came face to face with Auguste” (KR 113) Otherwise it would have been going straight up to the top of the list.

But seeing Laurent standing at the place where his brother died really is a heartbreaking moment that belongs here. Even more when Damen (Augustes killer) showed up and offered Laurent, to be there, as a friend.

Damen said, “I thought you might want—“

“Want?”

“A friend” said Damen. (KR 114) How must that feel for Laurent?

And that’s still not enough, because Damen (just meaning well) started talking about his fight with Auguste and how Laurents brother died. Maybe not a good timing but it gives the moment it’s heavy impact.

“He died well,” Damen made himself say. “He fought better than any man I’ve known. It was a fair fight, and he felt no pain. The end was quick.” (KR 115). And you can’t really argue about Laurents response to this:

“A fair fight?” said Laurent, turning back to him. “No fight’s ever fair. Someone’s always stronger” (KR 117) It was a well chosen statement because Laurent brought it up a little while after that conversation. But he is right. The fight wasn’t fair. Auguste was fighting for hours already while Damen came fresh from the Akielon tents and just made his way through the Prince’s guard straight to Auguste. Who knows if Damen would have won under other circumstances. And don’t take me wrong, I wouldn’t have liked that, either. But it’s something to think about.

But as if this isn’t sad enough, there is so much more in this moment. Damen and Laurent kinda talking about their night together. And this conversation, especially Damens statement, is a huge clue to another sad fate Laurent has to deal with.

“No. You fucked like a virgin,” said Damen, “half the time. The rest of the time—“

“Like I knew what to do?”

“Like you knew what you were used to” (KR 115)

Of cause it’s Damen and he doesn’t have a clue what he was talking about, but still, all of that happened because Laurent was mourning Ausguste’s death, wasn’t it? Well chosen place for this conversation and to make it even harder to read.

3. Nicaises Death

With Nicaises death, Laurent lost his little brother (Yes, not by blood, but still), too. The herold, who told Laurent that he commited treason and should stay trial in PG, just brought Nicaises head along and told Laurent this was a message from the Regent. “The soldier pulled the bag away from the severed head. [...] But it’s tumbled brown hair was dressed with star like pearls, and from the shape of his face, you could see that he has been beautiful” (PG 356) This hurts in many ways.

First of all, Nicaise is death. A character who shows us Laurents past and (even if he would never say so) cared for Laurent in a way. “Don’t tell him I came” he’d said. They’d had always, from the beginning, had a strange affinity. “This one pleaded for you” (PG 357)

Then the way Laurent acts and the things he said. Of cause Laurent never showed his real emotion and it’s hard to know what is on his mind. But those cold words hurt, even if you know that Laurent really liked Nicaise.

“You can tell my uncle boykiller, he can cut off the head off every child from here to the capital. It won’t make him into a king, it will simply mean he has no one left to fuck” (PG 358)

Other words Laurent used were “my uncle’s catamite” or “my uncle’s whore”. I can’t remember him using Nicaises name in that situation. Probably he doesn’t even know what to do with his feelings. But he finally showed what was really on his heart when he was alone with Damen.

“I’m sorry, I know what Nicaise meant to you.”

“He was my uncle’s whore” said Laurent.

“He was more than that. You thought of him as—“

“A brother?” said Laurent. “But I do not have terrible good luck with those.” (PG 366)

In my opinion this quote alone is pretty dark and sad, isn’t it?

Other hints that Laurent was mourning Nicaises death were released when Damen saw Nicaises earring after the boys death, that Laurent had held in his hand (PG 372) and that Laurent still thinks about Nicaise later (KR 276).

Another sad fact about Nicaises death is how Laurent blamed himself for it. There was nothing he could have done about it. He couldn’t have taken him along, but he still feels responsible.

“You’re right. I killed Nicaise when I left it half done. I should have either stayed away from him, or broken his faith in my uncle. I didn’t plan out. I left it to chance.” (PG 373)

And finally, think about that: Nicaise died alone “But in the end, the only person on his side was him” (PG 374), not knowing that the Regent got what he deservend and Laurent won. Probably he was even convinced that Laurent would lose this war and die in the first place. Pretty heavy knowledge for a 13 year old boy.

2. Kingsmeet- Damen realises

Even if Damen could have known sooner, because there were many hints (some even from Damen himself), he finally saw what the Regent did to Laurent (Another sad fact that happened before the book). The Regent told him on purpose, and Damens reaction was planned. He drew a sword in Kingsmeet, the place in Akielos where violence is punished with death imeadeatly. Damen kinda knows that he killing Auguste set that whole butterfly-effect in motion. And in this situation it goes even further because the Regent used Damens realisation to get his will and Laurent sacrificed himself for Damens life.  So even because of his own crimes the Regent gets his way again. This is really hard to believe because we really understand Damens anger right there. And even worse, there was a point Laurent knew exactly it would happen that way.

“Damen, get out,”said Laurent.

“No” said Damen. “He’s just a man.”

“Damen” said Laurent.

“No” (KR 285)

“He wants you to leave,” said the Regent. “Aren’t you curious why?”

“Damen” said Laurent.

“He has knelt for me”

The Regent said it in a calm, matter-of-fact voice, so that it didn’t penedrate at first. It was just a collection of words. Even when Damen turned, to see crimson on Laurents cheeks like a stain. And then the meaning of those words began forcing all other thoughts.  (KR 286)

So Laurent knew what was going to happen and tried to prevent it by sending Damen out, but of cause Damen wouldn’t be Damen if he just left Laurent alone with the Regent. And the Regent pushed it even further.

“I probably should have turned him away, but who can resist when a boy with a face like that asks you to stay with him? He was so lonely after his brothers died.” (KR 389)

So, we really can understand Damens reaction and that he didn’t even thought about his attack against the Regent. To be fair, it was the only reaction that made sense for Damen and his loyal and caring character. And of cause, his shock of the guards just letting that happen is understandable, too. Even if this is Kingsmeet.

“You all heard him, are you going to let him do this?” (KR 389)

1.Laurent actually believes he is worthless

The Regent does everything to ruin Laurent’s reputation over and over again. He cuts him off his supporters and makes the council and the Regent’s men believe that Laurent is a traitor to Vere and the crown and that the only thing his nephew deserves is execution.

But that’s not the worst thing about it. Laurent comes to the point where he really believes that he failed his brother and is worthless and alone. And of cause that plays in the Regent’s hand.

“I didn’t understand that he was fighting alone, and that he had been fighting alone for a very long time” (KR 307) was what Damen said at Laurent’s trial. This shows how much the Regent had cut Laurent off everyone he could trust.

“It was clear from the open look of horrified recognition on Laurents face that he hadn’t expected Damen— that he had not expected anyone” (KR 303) Another proof that Laurent really believed he was alone. And who could blame him? He had to ecpect treason even from his own men. Who wouldn’t feel lonely in this situation.

Laurent didn’t believe in himself, that’s shown when he sacrafices his own life first for Damen’s (not Damen’s) kid “Laurent was expecting me. He is here to give himself up for the child” (KR 284) and then for Damen “Laurent hadn’t brought Loyse to clear his own name, but to clear Damens” (KR 317). He had given up on himself and just tries to get the best out of it for Damen.

“Seeing Laurent’s shocked face, Damen realised that something had happened that Laurent hadn’t imagined.” (KR 323) when the Council finally showed Laurent loyalty. That’s proof that he had given up already.  And he did this probably a long time ago.

When the herald blamed Laurent for treason and told him to stand trial in KR, his reaction showed this, too. “Laurent said nothing, an uncharacteristic silence, and Damen saw the subtle signs, the tension across his shoulders [...]” (KR 184)

But I’d push that even further. There’s another quote that probably shows us that Laurent thinks he’s worthless:

“´You’re not good enough. You would have come for revenge, and I would have killed you. That’s how it would have been between us. Is that what you would have wanted? `

´Yes,` said Laurent.”(KR 137)

So Laurent just wanted revenge for Auguste, we knew that. What’s new there is that he knew that he’d probably die trying. And this is exactly what nearly happened at the end of the triology. Just that he changed the enemy. It wasn’t Damen’s death anymore that he wanted. He wanted to protect Damen and give his life for that. Because that was the only thing he considered his life worth for. And this is in my opinion the saddest moment or better parted into moments in the books.

Teenage Gojo! Jumps at the chance to bother you; what are you busy with? well, not busy enough for him not to bother you. You always try to not give Gojo a reaction; if you're lucky, he’ll get bored and go harass someone else.

Teenage Gojo! That barges into your mission: takes all of the attention and puts it on himself, making it worse for you since the infamous Satoru Gojo from the Gojo clan is here.

Teenage Gojo!  Getting pouty and being all dramatic when you end up getting extremely mad at him, like how dare he just barge in the middle of your mission when he shouldn’t even be there? It's so frustrating now that you have to take care of him and his whiny self, asking for attention.

Teenage Gojo! Getting confused: why haven’t you shown up at school already?

Teenage Gojo! Trying to get your forgiveness by sending you loads of gifts as an apology, he’s really sorry, okay? There he said it. Please take him back, or he’ll sulk at the front door of your dorm!

Teenage Gojo! Who denies even liking you when Geto and Shoko ask? But from the evidence of him going out of his way to talk to you and giving you a gift, it’s hard to believe otherwise.

Teenage Gojo! Isn’t obsessed with you? Of course everyone would believe otherwise. You're fun to mess with, especially when you get mad. You look hot when you're mad or whenever you yell at him, your arms crossed and brows furrowed, with a glare in your eyes that would make anyone fall to their knees, even him.

Teenage Gojo! Is it more delusional to say that he doesn’t like you than to make up fake scenarios of you and him in his head, like what if you start dating each other? Once it slipped out, Goo and Shoko heard about his thoughts.

Geto and Shoko tease him, Teenage Gojo! Maybe he likes you; his heart beats so loudly around you; whenever he gets you mad, he asks for forgiveness; gives you really expensive gifts; and always wants to be around you.

Once Teenage Gojo! accepts his crush on you, it just gets worse for you, always dragging you to places like the beach or the amusement park. Worse comes to worse when he starts to flirt with you, telling you to pick up lines or calling by some weird variation of your name.

You like him well, just a little. He's a little cute, but it's just ruined by his ugly and annoying personality. If he found that out, he would never let you live it down!

Teenage Gojo! Wasn’t okay after Geto had left; he stopped talking to everyone and even stopped bothering you—no calls, no showing up at your front door, and making himself home in your house. Nothing, which made you, for the first time, go to him and comfort him.

Seeing him in such a disheveled state that his hair was in, those black glasses didn’t cover his eyes, but he was without them; they were pink, and nothing but silence. He couldn’t say anything since you already knew what happened to everybody else.

Teenage Gojo! Who immediately grabbed you and hugged you tightly, face first into your chest? You felt wet tears from Gojo on your chest; you caressed his hair, and you stayed there in silence.

That’s how you spent the next couple of days with each other, as you sort of took care of him.

Gojo's whole room was clean and quiet, which gave you an eerie feeling. You were in the small kitchen, making soup for Gojo, while he was in the room under the covers of his bed, just lying there in silence.

Looking at him made you sympathetic to him. You might not have liked him, but you didn’t want to see him in this state.

When the hot soup is finished, go over to the drawer, grab the metal ladle, the glass soup bowl, and the little spoon with the tray; put the bowl to the side, take the ladle, and stir around the soup before pouring it into the small bowl.

Putting the soup-filled bowl onto the tray and taking it to Gojo's room, where he was lying under the covers.

Putting the tray onto the side table beside the bed, "Gojo,” you whisper, gently shaking him, which makes him get out from under the covers, his eyes still swollen.

"I made you soup.” You grabbed the soup and put it in front of him. He hadn’t been eating for a bit now. "No, but are you going to eat this?" Taking the spoon, stirring the soup before scooping it up, blowing it, and holding the spoon in front of his mouth

He looked at you with those tired blue eyes before finally drinking the soup, and immediately sticking out his tongue, “You’re a terrible cook,” he dramatically gagged, “I’m not.” “So are!” Gojo retorted back, making you blush in embarrassment.

“I was trying my best since I was worried.” You looked sideways, and he just went silent before moving the soup to the backside table and dragging you into bed with him, basically on top of him.

“Comfort me like this and not with your terrible cooking,” he laughs. “You! I’m fine at cooking!” You banter with each other like you used to, but you're not complaining. It was better than the sad, pitiful sight of Gojo you had seen before.

i agree with your last post wayyyy too much. i can’t do jon snow haters or people who say that dany had every right to burn down kings landing because they k!lled her best friend. okay??? what about the thousands of innocents. she had a whole army, she could have just gone for cersei or been an actual leader and not taken revenge on her own ‘people’. like??? also if you support jamie lannister being a king slayer and k!lling aerys to save thousands of lives (which ill assume most of the fandom does) then jon did the exact same thing. yes they both ‘betrayed’ people they served but it saved thousands of lives.

my only argument in dany’s defense is she should have never gone ‘mad’. the writers should have never made her get on dragon back and burn down an entire city, but since she did, then she has got to GO.

The thing is, is that the burning of Kings Landing has been a LONG existing prediction by book readers of what Dany will do once she reaches Westeros. It has been theorized for YEARS before Benioff and Weiss were likely ever told about the books planned ending beats.

But, it won't be because she's mad. It will be a calculated move on purpose, no madness, just self righteous justification that because they didn't want her as Queen, they should die.

In the show, Dany has posed this multiple times. Dany in the show over the years does NOT hesitate to say she wants to burn cities to the ground, make her enemies die screaming, and has routinely posed situations where her options are literally bend the knee or die.

For example, this is a snippet of dialouge from season 8 after she burned Kings Landing and one million people with it.

Jon: "What about everyone else? All the other people who think they know what's good." Dany: "They don't get to choose."

This sounds extremely like something Dany says to Jorah in season 4 when he informs her that the masters have disregarded her laws almost as soon as she left Yunkai.

Dany: "He will tell the masters what has happened in Meereen. He will explain the choice they have before them. They can live in my new world or they can die in their old one."

This is the exact same scenario. You either live in Dany's world exactly as she dictates it, or you die.

There is no actual choice she is giving the masters, it is her way or death. Exactly like she plans to do to the rest of Westeros. Season 8 was not out of character.

Jorah says in this very scene that it is tempting to always see your opposition as evil, but that by always treating those who oppose you as such, it is the good and innocent who will get caught in the crossfire, and she says that she has no interest in entertaining what other people think is good and evil, she does as she sees fit.

One Barristan dies, she leads whats left of the leaders of noble houses to where her dragons are locked away, and lets one burn a man alive with abosutely no proof these men had anything to do with it as a threat that she will do the same to them. Again, with no proof that the masters or noble houses of Mereen have ANY relation to the Sons of the Harpy.

Upon a rewatch, one will find Dany says a LOT of very concerning things that foreshadow whats to come. This is going to happen, this was always going to happen. Dany was not going to burn the Red Keep, because thats the castle her family built with the throne her family created. Its the symbol of everything she wants and thinks she's entitled too.

But the people? These people who in the show and likely books, will not see kindly to this foreign occupier who uses her dragons to scare people into submission and will not yeild their Queen or King to her? Well, they are in her way. They refuse to join her new world, so they die in their old one. She doesn't need the people of one city to take the throne as long as theres still a throne to sit upon.

Dany routinely sees evil in her enemies with no grey area. Jon, otherwise is a man who looked his enemy in the eye (lord commander of the nights watch who betrayed them as a spy up against the wildlings he spied on and defeated in battle), and said (paraphrasing) "We don't have to be friends, but you, your children, and your children's children all deserve to survive. Let me protect you."

When everyone hated him for it. But he did it because it was the right thing to do. Jon has always given men at their worst chances at redemption. Thats what the Nights Watch is, so many of them were criminals, murderers, rapists, but Jon lets them prove they are better then their worst parts and only punishes with due justice when they commit the re offending behavior. Jon doesn't kill Karl Tanner in a brutal way beacuse he likes it, he only killed him like that when his back was turned, because Karl was about to kill the innocent girl who helped Jon by stabbing Karl in the back when he had Jon pinned.

Dany has no right to burn down Kings Landing, there is no excuse for it. But she will not beacuse she is forced too, or by accident, or through madness. No, it will be a calculated, purposeful decision that she will choose to do this, because thats how she has chosen to commit every atrocity she's ever done, which when you tally it up, is shocking and disturbingly high.

It was a massacre of extreme proportions that she was proud of. Wheras Jon felt extreme guilt for not saving every free folk when the army of the dead massacred Hardhome, when that was completely out of his control or power, and when he still in fact, saved over 5000 lives of what was supposed to be his greatest enemy.

The completely unbelievable joke of a romance aside, the Jon we know would not have hesitated to kill her. That is one million lives she murdered in the most brutal fashion because she didn't get what she wanted.

But we know why Jon would want to kill her for it, beacuse she answered the very question he posed in season five in the most terrifying way possible.

Jon: "Isn't their survival more important than your pride?"

Dany said no, and massacred the very same people Jon has been trying to save for years. I was being factious when I said Jon should've killed her harder, but it's still true. Dany in the show became exactly what the books are leading up to. I've been thinking about this for a while, mostly because I went from the House MD fandom back into the Harry Potter fandom.

So I have really been thinking about Wilson in the Harry Potter universe. Specifically him being apart of the Marauders.

He would be a Muggle born wizard who somehow knew more than the entire student body combined. Was sorted into Gryffindor.

He was that person that was incredibly kind and sweet to all, was on first names bases with everyone.

Was the type to get away with everything, like this dude received the most detention slips out of anyone for being out of bed past curfew, but didn't attend a single one and never got called out on it.

Made friends with the House elves and that's how he learned to become such a fantastic cook. His specialty was chocolate cake and them pancakes. (You all know the ones)

Was the first person to befriend Remus and figue out he was a werewolf. Gave him his love for chocolate.

(I don't know if animagi and patronus' can be different but for this they can be but are usually the same.) (Also, also I just have to make dead poets society references. And I love the stories where Neil and Wilson are the same person.)

His animagus form is a brown peregrine falcon, his nickname being Perry or Peregrine. His patronus is a brown bear. (Because generally, he's cute and sweet, but can hurt you if provoked.)

Isn't someone who got made at anyone, would get annoyed and irritated at times but never mad. (Was the middle ground for the fifth year incident that I personally refuse to acknowledge.)

Umbridge is the first person that Wilson finds himself genuinely hating.

He gets sacked along with Trelawney, but Dumbledore does the whole they don't have to leave the grounds thing. Umbridge becomes the DADA professor from there.

When Bellatrix escapes Azkaban, Wilson builds up the courage to tell Neville about being his godfather, who promptly breaks down.

Wilson helps Harry teach Dumbledore's Army. And does cool, stylish escape by turning into his animagus form, just before Dumbledore does the thing with the phoenix.

In half blood prince, he returns as a guidance counsellor (lord knows Hogwarts needs one). He is genuinely happy for Snape for getting the position he always wanted.

After the battle of Hogwarts, Harry found Wilson standing in front of Remus' body, just staring with tears running down his face. Harry gave him a hug and all Wilson said was,

"I'm the only one left now."

Notkin gets sick (as per usual), it's really bad pneumonia. one of the kids goes to the dogheads to trade for medicine Khan ends up coming back with them the entire Souls' fort is dank, moldy, etc because of the water. Khan tells them to search for leaks, seal off bedrooms, dry as much as they can, and open manholes to the surface to cycle air out. then he gives Notkin the meds and brings him to the high rises as it'd be safer for recovery Notkin gets better in a few days and is later found angsting at the edge of one of the roofs Khan: "I didn't think you for one who would fall prey to the call of the void." (the intrusive thought to jump) Notkin just sits in silence for a bit. then says "Raiders havent attacked in awhile." Khan: "I tend to see that as a good thing-" Notkin: "I think everyone's dead." TLDR their crops are getting harder and harder to grow, they haven't seen any other people in years, there are no animals, no nothing. Just flat, empty desert and even emptier ruins. on top of Notkin's shit immune system and other health issues… he is thinking of just driving/walking in a direction until he finds proof that the world isn't dead (aka hope). or until he dies himself

I think its a bit OOC but.. Khan's more of a dreamer (obviously) so he is more likely to be like "well it just rained so the crops might do better after it drains a bit-" Notkin: "it's sour water and you know it"

Notkin was always more based on material things, not in a greedy way just.. he more down to earth and he recognizes that he has less and less to offer/promise his kids for a future each year.

I dunno, I'm always a bit unsure about his motivations for the future

Hello again! Here's part 5!

Chapter Seventeen:

"Quentin, get something nutritious to go with your soda. A Snickers bar or something." Oh they were both SO lucky May showed up after this.

Oh, poor Luidaeg. She's finally met the person who will eventually be able to remove the geas on her, and she's a person who decides that summoning the night-haunts is an acceptable plan.

Of all the people at ALH, I might like Elliot the most (other than April). I respect a character that can just roll with with an unexpected situation.

Toby mentions that Raven-maids and Raven-men are skin shifters like the Selkies. Given how/why the Selkies were created, this makes me curious about whether the Raven-maids/men were created for similar reasons. In the story published with Be the Serpent, Luidaeg says that she cursed the Siren who murdered her love to join the Sky Kingdoms. Maybe that has something to do with how they came about?

I really do feel sorry for Elliot about Yui. I'm glad they got their wedding after everyone was brought back.

Chapter Eighteen:

Connor is noooooot equipped to help out with quests. You were going to take Toby's car back? *Really*?? You had ONE job, man.

Was Sylvester still the Mad Duke when Quentin started his fostering? I'm pretty sure it was mentioned somewhere, but I can't remember off the top of my head. If he was, that might be why Quentin thinks that 'breaking out into hysterical laughter' is a normal reaction in Shadowed Hills.

Connor's relationship with the Luidaeg is definitely something that I want to try to pay more attention to on this re-read. It would be interesting to see what I can pick up from it now that we know about the Selkies.

Okay, Connor, I understand that your marriage is unhappy, but you're still married. Gently resting your joined hands on Toby's cheek is not cool!

Toby was probably lucky that Alex showed up and distracted Connor; he probably would've gotten a lot angrier than that otherwise.

Chapter Nineteen:

Connor may not be equipped for quests, but he does know his role as coffee-provider.

"We need to talk to [the night-haunts], and this is the only way. Believe me, I don't want to. I'm scared stiff." Toby is the ultimate proof that repeat exposure works.

I think I'm appreciating the wistful 'what-could-have-been' of Toby and Connor's relationship more this time around. I don't think they would've worked out in the long run, but they might've been able to be better friends to each other. It's a little sad that they never got to learn how to be that for each other.

Fuuuuuuuuuck Aaaaallleeeeex. Just - SO many things wrong. First, I feel like he contradicts himself while he's explaining? Does it come naturally or does he not do it to every woman he meets? Second, is it supposed to be a *compliment* that he doesn't enchant every woman he interacts with? Like it means something that he liked her enough to give her no choice in how she felt about him??

I wonder why Gordan didn't sabotage the summoning; she and Elliot got all of the flowers together, she would've had plenty of opportunity. Was she that confident that the night-haunts wouldn't be able to tell Toby anything? Was she hoping that they'd come and eat her? Was she curious enough about the night-haunts that she wanted to see it play out?

The summoning ritual is SO creepy/cool. We don't see Toby doing any concrete 'spells' with her magic; she just forces her way through a situation until she gets a desired outcome. I wonder if having kids is going to make her try to find a more consistent way to do things so she can teach them?

Chapter Twenty:

As much as we learn about them in this chapter, I think the night-haunts are the longest running mystery in the series. I saw a meta a while back theorizing that, after the Roane returned, the night-haunts lost their most stable food source and were in danger of fading unless they found another way to sustain themselves. I'm not sure if this is the direction the series would take them, but it would be a good reason to call in Toby's debt to them.

This might be the first time Toby's ever been described than 'wiser than most who deal with [the night-haunts]'.

The mandrake doppelganger make me sad, and I'm trying very hard not to think that the 'created just to die' part is foreshadowing of any kind.

Forget all the blood magic; Toby's superpower is being able to connect with people so strongly that it affects them *after death*.

Chapter Twenty One

'Backups. They had backups for the backups in this place. It was amazing anything had been able to go wrong: they should've had backups for the people, too.' Funny you should say that, Toby!

'"Look, I'd hug you, but I'd get blood al over you." "I don't care," [Quentin] said, and threw his arms around my neck.' Oh, I'm so glad that Quentin and Toby found each other.

Whatever else you can say about Luidaeg, her bedside manner is still better than Gordan's.

Jan, at least, gets (minor) props for actually planning on telling Toby everything before she died. It is honestly a miracle *anyone* made it out of this alive given how willing everyone was to take their project to the grave.

I don’t doxx people!! Have you even read this document? There are multiple instances of you doxxing your clients to third party unsuspecting clients. So we end up agreeing. “I am a failure.”

And then we look around at our life and focus on all the things that are “proof” that the lies are true… and ignore the things telling us otherwise.

Our whole lives can be altered and impacted by believing even just *one* lie.

Frankly, I get angry when I think how much satan has stolen from my life and the lives of so many other people I meet… all through lies.

He knows how to use lies to keep us from living in our God-given potential. He uses them to cover us in shame. His lies keep us stuck in bitterness and resentment.

His lies take away our joy and peace.

It makes me really mad. Because we end up living our life based on something that isn’t even true.

So here it is. Here is the one piece of advice I can give when it comes to lies:

STOP AGREEING WITH SATAN.

Listen, I know we can’t prevent thoughts from popping into our head. I know we are flawed humans who will inevitably have bad thoughts about ourselves and others.

But don’t you for a minute believe that you can’t tell satan to get the heck away from you.

You might not be able to stop the thoughts, but you can certainly stop agreeing with them.

When they pop into your mind you have the power to say, “shut up, devil. I know that’s you and I’m not going to stand in agreement with that.”

Do you know what that is? It’s you taking power away from the father of lies. It’s you saying “you don’t get to run my life anymore, no matter how hard you try!”

Internet is a Wonderful thing, and as more people have access to it, you'll see that more younger generations are learning to accept everyone, and learning that intolerance isn't tolerated.

To political figures: to you, we may seem like insignificant people. Turning hatred onto us to spread your publicity when there are people suffering because of you, well I'll be honest it's not like I expected anything different from you. Just remember there are more voters that are allies, and less that are ignorant pieces of human garbage.

To the LGB-TQ community: fine, you win. Now you're gay and an asshole. Thanks. It's funny how gay and lesbian people were fucking HUNTED years ago and now that it's happening to trans folk you're just hopping on the band wagon. If you can't beat them join them right?

To the people who just feel "uncomfortable": grow up. Seriously, grow up. You don't choose to be trans, and you can't be persuaded you are. If that were fucking possible then by reading this you'll be hypnotized into being trans. OBVIOUSLY THATS NOT HOW IT WORKS STOP BEING DUMB. There are good and bad people in every group of people. I'm not gonna sugarcoat this, there will be trans folk who do stupid stuff. but just because Jeffrey Epstein was white do you think all white people are pedo rapists? If not then why think all trans folk are the same?

To you "transgenderism doesn't exist" people: the fuck you mean? I'm not playing this game of "here's the proof" shit with you. You're just someone who won't read it. let me break it down for you. You met someone who thought they were trans, ended up recoming out as cis so they weren't trans. What part of that is hard to understand? They weren't trans. I'll bet you haven't met anyone who's trans. And if you had you probably had a thought of "well if that other person wasn't then it just doesn't exist, so this person isn't either" but let me tell you something. Transgenderism isn't something that easy. Most trans folk are quiet about it all, knowing the hate others get for being loud about it. Most trans folk keep their heads down. "What about you then? Why do you get to be loud?" Because I'm fucking angry. I'm posting this to my own fucking profile in HOPES that nobody sees this. BECAUSE I don't want to be seen as loud. But just because I'm trans doesn't mean I shouldn't be able to get mad.

To all trans folk: Let me make this clear. It's okay if you're experimenting with your gender, and it's okay if it turns out you're not trans. The LGBT community is understanding and patient. almost to a detriment however. For every trans person who re-comes out as cis, it makes us look like idiots. "I've never met such a person who un came out" well unfortunately I have. Sure it's rare, most people who are trans will most likely stay trans, but that doesn't mean everyone is trans. That person admitted they were lonely and didn't have friends and they felt comfortable being around people who treated them like a brave person. They un-came out as trans after realizing it wasn't a choice. They hated themselves for not actually being trans, and they felt like a horrible person for pretending like they were. I'm of the opinion that it's fine to experiment, but do equally as much research. If you're not sure who to talk to, try a trusted councilor or therapist. Even better, ask a post transition transgender person, if they're comfortable. It's not a choice tho. Please don't take advantage of this kindness.

To my dad:

I understand your pain. being molested by a trans person... It's understandable why you'd hate all of them. You went to college and understand that it's not a choice. You spent the time to understand the biology behind trans folk, and you have made me understand that to you I am accepted. I'm lucky to be understood by someone who is transphobic, As weird as that is, but it hurts to see people I relate with so much being hated by you. You aren't faking it either, you truly accept me as your daughter, but your trauma gets in the way of you being okay with me being trans. Because of the battle you're fighting with your trauma, and accepting me, it's caused me to think that you don't accept me, but I know you'd get up in arms brawling it out of my sake if someone called me a slur. I just wish you could put that trauma away for my sake too. Im not asking you to forgive that person whoever it was. Just don't hold trans folk in your heart as the villains.

/I really have to get Louis to practice fighting again... We can't let Jaehyun win...//

I went to his room to see that the door was slightly open. I carefully opened the door just to see a almost fully destroyed room.

And him in the middle of everything „Louis" He turned around and i was shocked //He never wanted to be a full vampire...why?// „Did you find out where she is?" I shiver ran Down my spine, his voice was cold and full of anger..."First you should calm down otherwise I wont tell you shit" with that i left the room and teleported away only to here something break as soon as i stood at the stairs //He really threw something after me// I shook my head //He'll need to learn to control his damn anger... But that only proofs that he really has feelings for her and that he wants her back.... But we can't just attack Jaehyun... We all need to learn how to control our power me and the others may be a bit better then Louis even thought we haven't used them in centuries.... But Louis never used his Powers not even as a child...but they are as Powerfull now as Y/Ns... I hope she's ok. Ever since she got taken everyone is down. Everyone worry's about her well being.//

I heard a knock on my door „Come in" Louis of course „Before you say something, I'm sorry i know i need to learn how to control it..." He looked down. I nodded „Good now come we have to practice" His head shot up „Your not mad?" I shook my head and laughed at him in disbelief „No... I know how you feel.. Remember when i almost destroyed the palace in my Kingdom?" He nodded „That was after she died...After i realized that I'll maybe never get her back.. So i understand how you feel." The look in his eyes changed from still slightly angry to sad. „Sorry.." „You dont need to apologize." I went to him and pulled him in a hug „We will get her back don't worry, I wont let the same thing happen again. There wont be another one losing his love" I felt him nod „I can't control..-„ „I know dont worry we'll help you" with that we went to go to the practice room and gathered the others too to practice with us.

Y/N POV.

The medicine had really work and luckily I was sleeping through the whole pain thing so i didn't notice anything.

Jaehyuns mom began to train me and I slowly began to understand how powerful my powers really were and how to control them.

„How will i be able to pay you back" I asked her when we took a small break. She didn't look at me „You don't have to. The biggest and best reward will be that I can see you together with your true love." She smiled. „Just promise me to end Jaeyhun or otherwise he'll never stop hurting people to get what he wants." I nodded //I really hope I'll be able to do that// „I know that you probably think -how will this work?- but believe me it will work out. You just have to trust yourself" I nodded again „Now come we want you to get strong fast don't we?" „Yes" with that we stood up and began to practice again.

Louis POV

The practice went well till now. Again the thoughts about Y/N... I felt anger boil up inside of me. //I need to get out before i hurt on of the others// I walked outside to get some fresh air. „Where are you going?" Ivan of course he'd notice. „I need fresh air. I don't want to hurt any of you guys with a anger outburst." With that I went into the garden.. But I couldn't calm down.. everything reminded me of her.... „FOR FUCK SAKE!!" I punched into one of the rock and it cracked into two pieces. I looked shocked at my hand and then the rock. //Shit// but I saw something inside the rock that got my attention „What is?-„ I stopped myself after seeing a what exactly it was. My eyes went wide „That can't be .... That means mom hide it from...dad..."

Y/N POV

We practiced till dawn and went back to the room to get dinner. Suddenly I felt something really strong.. „What was that?" I mumbled „It seems like your boyfriend found what his mother had hidden from her husband, Jaehyuns dad and Jaehyun. You'll have more control over your power now. But we still need to keep practicing." I nodded „Ok" //What did he find that has such strong power??// I kept thinking about it till I fell asleep..

Dann POV.

I searched for Louis, when i had found him he held something in his hands //What is- Nooooo how is that possible?//

My jaw dropped. „Is that?" „Yes it is...but i still don't get why my mom would have hidden it all the time" I nodded but then remembered „she did that to keep you save.. she told me that you'll find it when you need it the most and i think she was very right with that" He kept silent for awhile „You knew she hid it?" I nodded again „She made me promise not to tell anyone and since then a lot of time has passed..." He nodded „We need to get inside to come up with a plan. Please call the other and make sure no one is with us or finds us till we have a plan." I nodded „We will get her back and safe the Kingdom, now that we have my dear mothers help."

Louis POV.

I watched Dann walk away. //Please mother help us with this. Please help us get her back and safe the kingdom.//

I looked up to the sky and it began to rain //Mother always loved rainy day they calmed her down// My eyes widen in realization „Thank you mother"

So last year I just gave up on the replay halfway through. I picked it up again and finished it this year, and it just keeps aging like milk. Many have said that the Chapter 4 and 5 mysteries (Investigation + Trial) are perhaps the best in the game and some of the best in the series. On a technical level, I agree, but I also feel like it's a Chapter 1 situation all over again. I don't really care how clever Kodaka is with his mystery writing when it comes at the expense of story/character writing, and both these cases do this to an agonizingly frustrating degree.

I legit do not get Kokichi's plan in Chapter 4. This is the point where the narrative begins turning him into this super genius, but I guess the line between genius and insanity is thin because Kokichi goes right over the edge into confounding madness. From what I initially gathered, Kokichi gave into despair when he learned the "secret of the outside world" and engineered the whole Mercy Kill scheme as a result of it, and when it went awry he fell back on a contingency plan where he pretends to be the Mastermind. But on this replay, I realized that this can't possibly be the case since Kokichi was already working on his Mastermind impersonation scheme well before learning the "secret of the outside world" given the writing on the outdoor plaque, and later in Chapter 5 we learn that he's already deduced that the Killing Game is being put on to be watched by others which suggests that he (correctly) doesn't even believe the "secret of the outside world" is real; that he's caught on to the Flashback Lights implanting false memories. Plus he had Miu make the electrohammers, electrobombs and remote to hijack control of the Exisals: more proof his plan in Chapter 5 was already in the works and he fully intended to carry it out. So what was the point of anything he did in Chapter 4!? Why did he need to get Miu and Gonta killed? Were they a threat to his end goal in any way? Was trying to build up to his "reveal" as the Mastermind as part of a plan to end the Killing Game really worth the lives of two more people? It can't be explained away with "he snapped", because again he seemed to not believe the story the Flashback Lights showed and any insanity clearly wasn't enough to hamper his omniscient super genius feats. There is no justifiable in-story explanation, only the out-of-story reason that Kodaka needed to contrive a way to kill two more characters and provide more of a reason to make Kokichi the enemy of the rest of the group so that he can serve the Nagito role all the way through in Chapter 5 even if it goes against any logic or moral principles he supposedly has otherwise. It sucks because Miu and Gonta are two of my absolute favorite characters in the game, and I liked Kokichi well enough before this. But having them go out in this miserable, unpleasant way for nothing just pisses me off, and makes me hate Kokichi.

And then Chapter 5 utterly annihilates any liking I might have had for Maki. It starts shilling her for being the one to help bring everyone out of their depression and showing them the Hope's Peak-related Flashback Light, which makes you suspect the other shoe is going to drop soon. Then, when the others tell her that they can't kill Kokichi, this is what she says.

This is agreed upon. However, what everyone failed to take into consideration is that despite her passionate hatred for Kokichi, Maki's similar to him in one major way: she's a liar.

She immediately goes back on her word and, rather than wait to carry out the big plan decided upon with the rest of the group, she steals deadly poison from her "friend" Shuichi's lab - poison that's slow-moving because she specifically wants to make Kokichi suffer before he dies - then takes a crossbow and steals an Exisal to break into the hangar where Kaito is literally on the precipice of non-lethally subduing Kokichi. Her murder attempt goes awry and leads to what looks to be Kaito's death. Thinking she's the blackened, Maki then goes about trying to conceal her crime and get everyone else to vote for the wrong culprit, meaning everyone else but her dies, just to get revenge on Kokichi for the apparent result of her own cruel and reckless actions. As the game phrases it, she intends on sacrificing all of them.

And there are absolutely no consequences for ANY of this!

This angered me the first time around, and it angered me this time around too. Nobody is pissed off at Maki (especially not Shuichi despite her stealing from him and very cruelly trying to manipulate him during the trial), everyone easily forgives her despite her complete lack of remorse since "oh, but she was in wuv so she couldn't contain her feelings!", and Kaito ends up having not been killed by her after all. In the final chapter Shuichi even lionizes her as "the hero" of the story, even as we see she learned absolutely nothing from this incident since she still threatens to do whatever it takes to kill the (true) Mastermind and avenge Kaito...once again going back on an earlier promise she gave to not resort to murder in the process.

There is also this disingenuous narrative framing:

No. That is not how it works. Psychological and emotional manipulation is not literally mind control. It interferes with one's agency but it doesn't remove it altogether. Everyone was manipulated by the Flashback Light - but only Maki chose to respond to that manipulation in the way that she did. There was nothing in the Flashback Light that specifically put thoughts of going against the rest of the group to go kill Kokichi into Maki's head. That was all her, of her own free will. "Remembering" Kokichi was a Remnant of Despair and providing the drive to have hope overcome despair wasn't enough to drive the others to attempt to torture and murder Kokichi, let alone try to get everyone else killed along with him when this attempt backfired, so it shouldn't be a valid excuse for Maki. It doesn't let her off the hook, at all.

And beyond all of what I said already, what gets me is the double standard. Kaede seemed to accidentally kill someone else in an attempt to kill the Mastermind, then took full responsibility for it by leading Shuichi to the truth of the case....and she died. Maki seemed to accidentally kill someone else in an attempt to kill (who she thought was) the Mastermind, then took no responsibility for it and tried to conceal the truth from Shuichi so that he and everyone else would die on the altar of her misplaced sense of vengeance....and she lives. Similarly, we had Kirumi die after she took advantage of Ryoma's depression for her own benefit and tried to have everyone else die for the sake of her alleged noble cause, Korekiyo die after being outed as a mass murderer, and Gonta die after being manipulated by false memories. These are all qualities that Maki shares, but she gets to live for no other reason but authorial bias from Kodaka. Such Mary Sue writing; it takes me out of the game just to think about it.

Sigh. Kokichi the Creator's Pest and Maki the Creator's Pet. They, along with Shuichi for replacing Kaede and Kaito for being tightly connected to all of these characters, just really dragged this game down as much as its terrible pacing and notorious twist ending did for me.

Been replaying Danganronpa V3, this time on the Nintendo Switch, and…..um, yeah, I think I’m enjoying it even less now. And I didn’t exactly hold the most favorable view on it to start with! But on this replay, I’ve been speeding through the text in the visual novel sections and the gameplay in the class trial sections as best as I possibly can and yet it still seems to take forever to get through. This game’s pacing is horrendous! I find myself returning to the original Danganronpa and to Danganronpa 2 again and again without problem. This is my first actual return to V3 and it’s trying my patience to a frustrating degree. So much of the conversations are needlessly dragged out, the trials are padded with too many detours, the murder plans too convoluted for their own good, too many promising plot threads end up going nowhere, and too much time in general gets wasted by those goddamn Monokubs.

And yeah, the decision to make a Decoy Protagonist out of Kaede remains a huge creative blunder on Kodaka’s part. The way in which this twist is done is masterfully executed, I won’t deny that - but I also won’t deny that once it’s over with and we switch to Shuichi as the protagonist, there is a feeling of emptiness that is never filled. The game did such a good and natural job at making you like Kaede and be interested in her personal journey, so reducing that journey to just a foundational motivation for Shuichi’s far less engaging arc with the irritatingly ham-fisted writing around him, Kaito and Maki…it’s just a punch to the player that hurts way too much to appreciate. Tip: if you’re going to do a shocking twist that subverts expectations, what replaces the thing that was expected has to be either as good or better. And in this case, I might have cared far less about the game’s other flaws if only I was still following Kaede through it all. When she died, so too did most of my interest in the game.
